Origin of Banarasi Silk:
The unmatched example of excellent craftsmanship was brought by the Mughal in India. They popularised the art of weaving and designing which inspired many craftsmen to adopt the intricate art of weaving in the sarees. Though silk for Banarasi sarees is now provided by the southern part of India, but back then the silk was imported from China. 
Banarasi silk sarees for bride are till date considered to  be one among the finest traditional sarees. Distinctive flowery pattern is quite typical in present days. The designs are made using gold as well as silver brocade known as Zari. These designs are inspired by the Mughals. The saree is famous around the world for its heavy work of gold, small detailed figures, metal visual effects and compact weaving.

Work involved in making the saree behind all the grace and grandeur are weavers who work on the 9 yard saree day and night to create something so splendid, you fall in love with it at first sight. It takes at least three craftsmen to work together on the saree with the help of the power-loom. The artisans may take about 15 days to six months depending on the complexity of the designs. If the design is to be made exclusively and royal on demand, it can even take about a full year to accomplish the task.

Types of Banarasi silk sarees:

Banarasi sarees are mainly categorised in four varieties of which the Banarasi Silk sarees are the top favourite. Based on the designs on the saree and combination of fabric used, Banarasi silk sarees can be further divided in 6 more segments. These are:

  1. Jamdani saree- this is a saree is not made purely of silk. The silk fabric has brocades made of cotton.
  2. Jangla saree- this involves the use of colourful threads to depict the nature and heaviness of festivity. The designs are usually widespread and huge.

  3. Tanchoi saree- this saree makes use of colourful extra-weft silk yarn to form the outline of the design. The overall design throughout the saree shows up as a maze and gives a look like a kaleidoscope.

  4. Tissue saree- the saree is formed with the combination of silk fabric and zari brocade giving it a look like a golden cloth.
